VENTO
What we need in these troubled times is soft textures, rounded shapes and colours without sharp contrasts. Research clearly shows and proves that in the search for peace, we subconsciously surround ourselves with pleasant, cosy objects in colours that are associated with the soothing power of nature. This principle applies even more clearly to fabrics that, like no other material objects, are associated with carefree relaxation. Winter festive days are all about spending time at home, which should offer comfort and a sense of security like no other place on earth.
The current trend of thick, fluffy textiles, with a bouclé, fur and lambskin texture can be seen in huggable blankets, lap robes, throws and pillows waiting to be wrapped around you. Warm hues of dusty browns, sandy beiges, and butter creams give them a soothing warmth. In such a fine company, it really does not take much to feel truly relaxed in a home, December holiday spa.
It is hard to imagine any Christmas or everyday dinner, or even an afternoon tea without textiles. Porcelain crockery of various shapes, transparent glassware, silver cutlery, flowers and decorative elements like the company of fabrics. They seem to be in the background, but in fact play first fiddle. Contemporary off-white linen, raw cottons or recycled blends are perfect for traditional tablecloths, but also in a more modest way, for napkins of various sizes, accompanying plates and lining baskets for bread or Christmas Eve pasties. Even a tiny piece of plain yet pristine fabric complemented by a green sprig, holly berry, fir cone or aniseed star is the best and proven way to bring festive style to the table.
Remember to choose good quality. Decide whether you prefer soft-to-the-touch, friendly fibres, smooth weaves or a slightly harsh wearing effect in the case of linens, whose beauty lies in an imperfectly ironed surface. Mix them together, match them according to their shade, change the colour depending on the time of day or the type of meal. Place them on plates or wrap them around tableware and cutlery. Match them with your favourite ceramics and glassware, complement them with natural decorations – let the fabrics on the table take care of the festive atmosphere.
A piece of fabric can be a gift in itself. A beautiful tablecloth, a set of linen napkins, a warm blanket, a cushion, but also a spectacle or a phone case, a percale bedding or a cotton bag for perfumes – there are a lot of ideas for textile presents. We often give them during Christmas. Remember that a roll of good quality fabric or even a small piece of it can also be a great addition in the form of an ingenious, pleasant-to-the-touch and very personal packaging. [We wrote more about the beautiful art of wrapping gifts in fabric in the article “Furoshiki – the most famous bundle in the world” of 22 December 2020].
