Under the stage lights

New seats in the auditorium and loges of Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Krakow have been upholstered with our velvet George FR.

Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Krakow (initially City Theatre) has operated continuously since 1893 and is one of the most famous and distinguished theatre houses in Poland. The building is considered to be one of the most valuable monuments of theatre architecture in Europe. Its interior is decorated with frescoes by the Viennese artist Antoni Tuch and the famous curtain by Henryk Siemiradzki.

The year 2022 witnessed the second seating replacement in the 130-year history of the Krakovian theatre. The form of the new furniture is closely related to the original one, designed by Jan Zawiejski, the theatre’s architect. Its design and the overall concept of the new auditorium arrangement have been created by Konior Studio, an architectural firm from Katowice. The furniture, in turn, has been manufactured by FORUM Nowy Styl. Four types of seats have been designed to ensure the optimum use of the auditorium space and create a comfortable viewing experience. The designers placed a major focus on the acoustics – the seats fold up and down noiselessly so as not to disturb performances.

The fabric used in the project was our velvet George FR in a fine shade of red (Magenta 201). This velvet knitted fabric with a slightly glossy surface has been chosen due to its stylistic compatibility with the historical interior abundant in gilding and stucco, as well as its functionality – high abrasion resistance and stain-resistant finish. Given the increased fire safety requirements in public buildings, the fabric has been manufactured in an FR version, i.e., with a special flame retardant coating.
